Part 1 has already been released, and now we are onto Part 2 which could be taken synonymously with Tier 2, as this group is a cut below the prior one in my eyes.
Dean, with respect to Bufkin, is there any precedent to taller combo guards making a successful transition to point guard? I think the current trend with Luka coming into the league is for teams to try and get big guards who can't be hunted as easily during the playoffs. Guys like Jamal Murray or Tyler Herro, while weak defensively, can still lean on their positional size in the playoffs and that may be the hope for Bufkin who has a respectable A:TO.
Also regarding Anthony Black, do you think he has similarities to Jeremy Sochan last year? I see a similar high level processing speed with defensive versatility who ideally improves the jumper to hit their upside tail.
Jamal Murray was always had PG skills, but like other Kentucky guards was forced off ball next to Tyler Ulis. And playing with Jokic he doesn't need to be a full fledged floor general. Tyler Herro is a small SG and Miami massively overperformed in the playoffs without him. He was better than Bufkin in college too so is not a positive example.
Sometimes guys develop PG skills over time, it's possible for Kobe. That's basically what you are hoping for with Derrick White outcome, along with defense, shooting, etc.
Anthony Black has those similarities to Sochan for sure, where you are betting on instincts being great and shot improving. They are different player types, but there are parallels in their profile which is a type that generally make for good upside pulls in the draft.
Nice work as always Dean! I'm curious to see what are your thoughts about Whitehead and why do you think Jett is a better prospect than him (health issues aside)
First of all Jett is likely better shooter, possibly by a big margin. Got off a ton of 3PA, had a bigger sample of success, made 80% FT
Dariq had good percentages shooting but very small sample, and that wasn’t his rep coming in. Otherwise he had very disappointing athleticism, rarely got to rim off the dribble, only 2 dunks. His dimensions of 6’7 with 6’10 wing are fine, but a bit small for SF. In tandem with poor athleticism he has lowkey bad physical profile.
Offensively his decision making is atrocious. Don’t think this is injury related, bc it was trash in Hoop Summit too. He made like 6 of the top 10 lowest IQ plays in that game.
He has some instincts + reaction times, but what is his NBA role? He’s probably bad on D, and on offense he is a disaster with the ball. He is pretty much a pure spotup guy with a low sample of shooting success.
Sure he’s young and maybe better than injuries suggested, so can’t count him out. But in all likelihood he’s just bad
